Bricks

While visiting Savannah we saw the bricks.  SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) is saving them and rebuilding areas built with blood.  Buildings that were made with the bricks made by slaves are now being preserved for future generations to see and remember.  A lasting reminder that life is not fair and that bad things happen.  But even more, these bricks serve as a reminder that we should never let this kind of atrocity happen again.

Thankfully, a time not forgotten

Bricks

Imagine their hands

Covered in mud

Throwing the mix into molds

A mixture of

Mud

Hay

Blood

Their fingerprints still show

From hundreds of years ago

Buildings

Not theirs

Cotton warehouses

Homes

General stores

Tears mixed in with sweat

Who cared

Not the holders of the whips

Not the stick bearers

They were owned

Used

Abused

Lessons learned

Touch the bricks

Feel the pain

Hold their hands

Cry

Leave your tears

In remembrance

Look at your hands

Imagine theirs
