Her Wedding Band

hands

To the ones who suffer from Alzheimer’s and the families that have to deal with a forgotten reality.  Living each day for that one moment of clarity is a daily routine for so many unsung heroes.  Thier lives captured in the crevices of a mind that is lost and trying to find its way back.  All they long for is one simple moment,

One simple I love you

He stands at her bedside, just brushing her hair
As she looks out the window, with a lonely lost stare
He reads her his bible, as she holds his hand
And he prays to his maker, help me understand

Every day he gets there, before she awakes
And he makes sure her photos, well they’re perfectly straight
At night she’ll be sleeping, before he will leave
And he kisses her lips, and sends God his plea

Lord I hope she’s not lonely, in this world of hers
And I pray she’s as happy, as we both once were
God I know you are with her, and you’re holding her hand
And he cries as he straightens, her gold wedding band

His friends say it’s hopeless, she’ll never come back
That he needs to move on, and get his life on track
That she doesn’t know you, and the way that you were
He says she may not know me, but God I know her

Lord I hope she’s not lonely, in this world of hers
And I pray she’s as happy, as we both once were
God I know you are with her, and you’re holding her hand
And he cries as he straightens, her gold wedding band

His hands start to tremble, and he sheds a tear
As he sees her smiling, for the first time in years
She whispers I love you, and holds his hand tight
She breathes her last breath, then closes her eyes

Lord I know she’s not lonely, in this world of yours
And I know she’s as happy, as we both once were
God I know you are with her, and you’re holding her hand
And he cries as he straightens, her gold wedding band

God I know you are with her, and you’re holding her hand
And he cries as he takes off, her gold wedding band
